Gantz – Chapter 320 ReviewAuthor: Jon Martin | Thursday, June 10th, 2010 |
This chapter caught me by surprise. How fast everything can fall apart. Tae-chan and a group of other survivors are caught by the alien invaders and shuffled into a huge room.
The invaders spray them with an unknown substance as they flee in terror. I was worried at first that this would be the end of Tae-chan. I figured it was acid but it only seems to take their clothes of. I found this funny and disturbing. For as long as Gantz has been around, people have complained about the nudity and the art. So I thought it was kind of amusing they strip everyone of their clothes. Did you know in Japan they usually censor pubic hair on genetalia? Not in drawings though.
Gantz is running the full gamut of atrocity it seems. At first it was about killing aliens that didn’t seem to be fighting back and didn’t want to fight.. but Gantz made them destroy them. Then as the game became more complicated, they grew used to the killing and just wanted to be freed, soon it became about how to reduce casualties as the war broke out into the real world. These next few chapters will probably be brutal as it seems they will be showing just how low humanity can sink. That may sound weird but anything the Aliens do will probably be a mirror of something that has happened in our history.
Gantz doensn’t shy away from showing the bad things people do when they are at war. In one chapter as the Gantz team takes on their latest foe, another Gantz team arrives. This was a big surprise at the time because the reader and characters didn’t know other Gantz teams existed.
So we get to meet this another team but suddenly the game starts and the alien-killing must begin. Everyone heads out to kill their targets. Halfway through, one of the members from the other team brutally beats up and alien and begins raping it. These are the atrocities I’m talking about, this type of stuff happens in war and is happening now even. I think Gantz is actually much more restrained than people give it credit for. There is manga in Japan that goes far beyond this in terms of shocking the viewer, just horrible repulsive stuff but Gantz never heads in to that territory, it doesn’t go for the cheap shock or cheap gross-out. The violence is necessary and fits in with the plot and themes. Anyway, continuing on…
Eventually they reach a room filled with water and they are locked inside. We are starting to be introduced to some more characters, I wonder if they will eventually play a bigger role in the narrative. At one point a scary looking guy comes up behind Tae and it seems like she is going to be taken advantage of.
Nothing comes of it though, it’s a weird moment. A few of the prisoners think that the liquid they are in is just sterilizing them because humans might carry bacteria that is bad for the alien species. Meanwhile Kei let himself be captured and is himself a prisoner. Looks like he plans to try to get her back, I’m guessing he will be subjected to that liquid too but I bet it won’t melt off the Gantz suit that Kei is wearing.
Back inside, Tae and the other captured humans talk. One man says that he understands why the aliens would take them and keep them because he once took a sparrow as a pet and had no problem keeping it in a cage. He said that it died of fear. Suddenly, the liquid they are in starts to rise.
They are swept into another room and come face-to-face with what seems like their fate. I think I would be freaking out at this point.
As they are swept away there is a lot of confusion and chaos. It doesn’t seem like there is much hope for Tae-chan. Those people hanging upside down are cut open at the chest and are spewing blood all over the floor. Maybe the aliens collect their blood? Maybe they eat humans? Dissect them? They could have killed them earlier, I wonder why they didn’t.
Just when it looks like all hope is lost a hand pulls Tae-chan out of the water, it’s the creepy guy from earlier.
So who is this guy? Guess we’ll have to find out in two weeks. This chapter was pretty interesting, lots of action, I’m interested to see where things are going. There are two Kei’s running around, the other Kei is busy with the ex-Gantzers, who have taken one of the giant aliens captive. I’m still waiting to see how the two Kei’s will play out, I wonder if one will die.. or maybe even both…
Oh well, come back in two weeks for the next review!
