Tupac Shakur would have been thirty nine today. So today would seem best to take a moment to reflect on a controversial poet and artist. Shakur came from the ghetto and he died because of the ghetto lifestyle. Having actually rapped his way into fast money, this “gangsta” mentality was still ingrained in him. Yet he has succeeded, he had let his creativity and hunger take charge into a career and cult like following. But…his anger was the same. With all the popularity that Shakur had he made no excuses for his behavior. Spitting on cameras and cursing on air became something that was just a part of his persona. How do you know when to let go? He didn’t. His attitude towards the “system” was the same…hate. The system did not give opportunity to the people that had been around him his whole life, the strong black women especially his mother, who still suffered injustice.
Shakur was angry, and his anger made him rely on the tactics that he rapped about, the ones that maybe, should have been left behind. Regardless, the image that has been left with us, is powerful. He was beyond talented. He had a voice, he spoke love and hate, with equal amount of respect and passion. Not apologizing for seeing both sides. He made you listen. His acting chops were admirable, his poetry was sublime. The respect that Shakur gets is every bit deserved, his legacy lives on and it makes me sad to think what could have been. Many conspiracy theorists think he in fact is still alive to which I say…maybe and if so…hopefully his talent is being appreciated by those around him. ere Vanessa Prat born in Barcelona, came to the greatest city in the world at the ripe ol’ age of six.
