Opinion: Was it Worth it For Obama to Go on ‘The View’Author: Jon Martin | Saturday, July 31st, 2010 |
Now that the dust has settled from President Obama’s visit to ‘The View’, I thought I’d share my two cents on this “historic” occasion. I want to start with a confession though, I’m a big fan of ‘The View’, I watch almost every episode. Many people might laugh at that because they dismiss the show as a daytime fodder for bored middle-aged women but they do at their own peril! What’s always been so interesting to me about ‘The View’ is that it’s sort of like a microcosm of American opinions on pop culture and politics. Sure, frivilous topics come up and some really stupid opinions are expressed (all of the panel has said their fair share of dumb things) but at the end of the day, ‘The View’ is one of the only shows out there that feels like there are REAL discussions taking place.
Where else will you hear that prayer is “un-intellectual“? I think it’s really your own loss if you choose to judge a show before really delving into it’s content. It’s easy to watch a few clips and say they are a bunch of annoying squawking bitches but there is some groundbreaking television happening on ‘The View’. Now that that’s settled, on to Obama!
Obama originally planned to speak at a Boy Scout’s jamboree but instead chose to come on ‘The VIew’. Maybe I’m an asshole elitist but I really don’t care that he didn’t speak at the jamboree. I’m sure it was nice and was probably a huge event.. but I’d rather hear why we are in Afghanistan than have him talk to a bunch of children.. call me crazy.
As the show began I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I was hoping for a REAL debate of what’s going on, BP, Afghanistan, Gay Marriage, Republican Obstructionism but only a few of these subjects were broached. I REALLY wanted the ladies to ask about the BP spill and it’s catastrophic effects but no one ever mentioned it.
Afghanistan was a big topic of discussion and Barbara took the initiative to ask Obama why we are still in Afghanistan and why we can’t leave. Watch:
Obama’s response was understandable, basically we want to “flush out dem turrists” but that really isn’t an acceptable answer anymore. No, Obama we don’t care about “finishing the job” we want to stop wasting billions of dollars there as our economy crumbles. At least we got a drawn-down date out of it. Obama told Joy that we would start drawing troops down in winter of 2011, Joy made the point of repeating this so people will look back at this clip in the future when Obama doesn’t begin a troop drawn-down (guess I’m jaded).
The most entertaining exchange of the show was probably Elizabeth asking Obama about jobs. She asked some competent questions, questions that even I was curious about. Sadly for her, she was brutally shot down by Obama (to the cheers of the crowd) early on in the show. I think most people that watch ‘The View’ love to hate Hasslebeck. She’s someone who I disagree with vehemently but find her really charming and funny when she’s not talking about politics. It is strange that a former “Survivor” cast-mate is sitting across from the president? Here’s the clip:
These kinds of exchanges were what I was looking for. In fact, I would have loved an interview done JUST by Hasslebeck, so Obama could take the time to dismantle all her right-wing talking points. The problem with Obama’s guest appearnce was that he was in too-good of company. Whoopi loves him, Sherri gushes about him, and Joy wants to have sex with him (clearly). I think Barbara and Elizabeth are the only two that are willing to ask him tough questions.
Another interesting exchange was when Joy Behar asked Obama what he thought about Fox News constantly attacking him. Fox News has been giving Obama negative press since it was announced he would be running for president. One of their first stories about him was that he studied at a mosque as a child and they’ve really taken any chance possible to rail against him. Watch the clip:
Even though the American public is still in the dark about a lot of important issues, I think Obama’s visit to ‘The View’ was a good step toward reassuring the public he’s doing the right things. We didn’t hear much about BP, gay issues, Israel/Palestine, or the economy but what do you expect in 40 minutes? I think interviews like this are great PR and also great for the public because it’s a more informal setting and questions can be asked that might not be otherwise.
Verdict: It was a good idea.
But: Next time, ask Obama some tougher questions!
