Michael Moore: The McDonald’s two blocks from Ground Zero Has Killed More People Than the Hijackers (Video)Author: Jon Martin | Saturday, September 18th, 2010 |
Michael Moore sat down with Bill Maher on the season premiere of Real Time earlier tonight to discuss the Ground Zero Mosque controversy. Moore recently made headlines when he said “this is no longer America” if the ground zero mosque wasn’t built. Moore is now even doing fundraising for the mosque, in response to Donald Trump’s confusing bid for the building. “Media geniuses[sic]” Gawker.com even tried to get in on the publicity by offering Trump $10,000 to “shut up”. neat. :-I
In this clip Moore explains to Bill why it shouldn’t matter if a majority of American’s don’t want the mosque built so close to ground zero. A majority of American’s wanted to go in to Iraq. It was the media that convinced that majority too, since there was no actual reason for us to go.
Moore also took some time to bash the media for their lack of professionalism in covering the Tea Party movement. He says that the media covers every right-wing nut that makes an outrageous statement but they don’t focus on the good being done by Democrats. On one hand, the media is just doing their job in an attempt for profits, since money is tight these days… however, it is a shame that journalists are so willing to surrender their ethics for some pageviews or higher neilson ratings.
The news media industry has to focus on what will grab reader’s attention. Moore is right, the media seems to be giving lunatics attention but that is because we like to gape at the crazy people. It’s why tabloids are so popular. The unintended side effect, however, is that stupid people also see the crazy people and think since that person is on television, they have some kind of authority or that they are doing something right.
“It does seem like we are at a place in history, it’s not just that we just disagree politically, it’s like we have two different realities. There’s one reality where Obama is a secret Muslim and tax cuts pay for themselves.. and then there’s reality.” — Bill Maher
The conversation on the Tea Party and racism continued into the panel discussion with Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, Mark Mckinnon of the Daily Beast and ABC foreign correspondent Martha Raddatz. Hamm and the panel discussed Newt Gingrinch’s comments that Obama has a “Kenyan, anti-colonial” worldview and how most of the tea party member’s seem to be blatantly racist. There was actually a time when Newt Gingrinch was somewhat respected even by Democrats but these new comments are shocking.
Many are also shocked that Tea Party candidate Christine O’Donnell swept the senate primaries, beating nine-term GOP candidate Mike Castle. Supposedly, this has the GOP shaking in it’s boots.. but are they REALLY shaking in their boots? Something tells me that the old-school Republican establishment has a lot of money/control. Perhaps this movement is actually just a strategy against Obama, letting the crazy racists stir up things during economic hard times. . When an economy goes downhill demagogues like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin become popular.
“Do you think people like Sarah Palin and Christine O’Donnell, do or don’t want a war with the Muslims? Cause I do.” — Bill Maher
Is a war between Christianity and Islam really what Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell and the Tea Party movement have in the cards? Jon Hamm seems to think so, and it would appear that the Tea Party has no problem making racially charged statements about Muslims in public. What will be the ramifications if the Tea Party movement and the Republican movement begin fighting? Then after that, what if Obama wins a second term? We’ve already had several right-wing terror attacks since Obama took office. I can’t imagine how duped the movement will feel if they lose, they will feel cheated, they will assume Obama rigged the vote. I wonder how far their much-publicized “anger” will take them.
As always, Maher saved his most biting comments for his New Rules segment. Enjoy.
