Richard Dawkins and S.E. Cupp on Real Time with Bill Maher (Video)Author: Jon Martin | Saturday, October 9th, 2010 |
Richard Dawkins sat down with Bill Maher last night on ‘Real Time with Bill Maher’ to discuss religion and evolution. Maher quickly asked Dawkins what he thought of Christine O’Donnell’s recent comments that “evolution is a myth” and “if monkeys are evolving why aren’t they still evolving?”. Dawkin’s replied by saying what O’Donnell said was “spectacularly stupid”. Maher makes the point that O’Donnell seems to believe she can walk into a zoo and watch a monkey evolve. The reason O’Donnell’s comments have recieved so much flak are not so much because she believes in creationism but because she has no idea how evolution works.
What can she do now though? She doesn’t believe in evolution, so it’s not like she can go study it and improve on her previous comments. She already released a campaign-killing commercial in which her first words are “I’m not a witch”. I think Maher wanted to give Dawkins a soundbyte about O’Donnell that might make it on other television shows, I hope it does. Here are some links to watch the full episode.
Update: My bandwidth is almost out, so I’m taking the clips off my site. Full episode still on megaupload/megavideo though.
It seems like the atheism movement is picking up steam. As long as people like Maher, Dawkins, and Hitchens continue to get out in the public and preach reason and logic, things might start changing. After discussing O’Donnell a bit they shifted over to the bible and why so many people put faith in it. Dawkins points out that the bible was written by people thousands of years ago, that had no idea of their surroundings and no ideas about science or how things really worked.
“Atheist” S.E.Cupp was on the panel and she did not disappoint. She claims to be an atheist but time and time again makes arguments that seem more apt for a religious person or a believer to make. She makes the case that, since Maher hasn’t seen god how religious people do, he can’t make the argument that god doesn’t exist. What doesn’t make sense is that as an Atheist she has no problem with people warping realty to serve their needs. Doesn’t S.E. Cupp see that as dangerous?
Doesn’t she find it dangerous that someone like her, that claimed to not believe in god, would be killed in the past? She seems like she’s an atheist because she never had a religious awakening, not because she thinks logic and facts take precedence over fairy-tales. S.E. Cupp seems to await her “a-ha” moment but it hasn’t come yet, perhaps S.E. Cupp wishes she were religious because then she would fit in with everyone.. but she’s too smart, she hasn’t heard from god, so she’s kind of doing this whole thing half-assed because she’s still hoping god will talk to her. Just my take.
