Glenn Beck and Rachel Maddow Attack GOP on Constitution revisionism (Video)

Last night, both Glenn Beck and Rachel Maddow came out harshly against members of the GOP. Republicans came under fire yesterday for reading an edited version of the constitution to the House of Representatives. The most notable change of their version was that they left out the 3/5ths compromise.
The three-fifths compromise was an agreement between Southern and Northern states reached during the Constitutional Convention of 1787. It gave slaves 3/5ths citizenship. The compromise was not popular, and it was64 used to take away black rights. The north didn’t want slaves to have the right to vote if they were not considered full citizens, the south wanted them to be counted because then the south would have more votes (due to all the slaves). The Jim Crow laws and things like the “grandfather clause” that only allowed blacks to vote if their grandfather was allowed to vote , were also used to try to curb the influence of blacks on American society.
Beck said that the 3/5ths compromise was good because it set up a ‘ticking time bomb’ for slavery, meaning it would eventually end.
Maddow felt differently, she felt that the attempts to take out things like the 3/5ths compromise are just attempts by Republicans to change history and play revisionism. Recently, Republicans have been saying we must “return to the ways of the founding fathers” but by saying this, they ignore the many revisions and changes the constitution has had to go through. The constitution is not a static document, it evolves with time.
Personally, I find it a little scary when republicans take it upon themselves to edit things. It’s odd but whenever a Republican does something like this, it seem so nefarious. Why would they edit something so important out of the constitution? Don’t they have respect for it as a document?
