Why the GOP Candidates are Unelectable

The Republican candidates suck! All of them, they’re horrible and unelectable. From Mitt Romney to Ron Paul, they all have problems and since the Iowa Caucuses has whittled them down to just three (Romney, Paul, Santorum) it’s much easier to reflect on just how bad some that stepped down were. Here’s how fucked up all the GOP candidates are in one or two sentences.

Looking Forward: Will Gabrielle Giffords Testify Against Jared Loughner in Court?

Rachel Maddow chastises left and right on Gifford Rhetoric (Video)

Earlier tonight on The Rachel Maddow Show, Rachel discussed the heart-breaking shooting earlier this week in Arizona. In the days since the shooting accusations have been heaped from both sides but none with real merit. Bill Maher told Anderson Cooper he thought the right is partly to blame, while Bill O’Reilly says that Democrats have been “repulsive” in the way they have approached this situation. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart weighed in as well, both with the kind of responses you would expect.

Rachel took a non-partisan stance calling out both Democrats and Republicans. Jared Loughner was assuredly not a Republican and a photoshopped Republican Registration document isn’t going to solve the problem of people like Loughner.

Bill Maher says Republicans are partly responsible for Gifford’s Shooting (Video)

Earlier tonight on Anderson Cooper 360, Bill Maher sat down with Anderson Cooper to discuss the attempted assassination of Gabrielle Giffords that took place earlier in the week. Anderson asked whether it was fair to place blame on anyone but the shooter, Maher said that Jared Loughner was a nut but he also said that many of Jared’s ideas are very similiar to what Glenn Beck talks about on his show. Maher said he wasn’t specifically pointing out Beck but he said that Loughner did have a big chalkboard in his basement and it probably didn’t look that different than Glenn Beck’s.

Maher said that there is a false equivalency saying that the left is just as bad as the right. This isn’t true though, the left isn’t bringing guns to political debates and the left isn’t drawing crosshairs on the names of political opponents, the left isn’t calling for “second-amendment solutions”.

Wife of White house aid found dead in burned car

It’s been a bad week to be in congress, and that’s putting it lightly. Earlier this week, the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords left Giffords in the hospital and five dead, including a nine year old girl and Federal Judge John Roll. This morning, Ashley Turton, the wife of White House aid Dan Turton was found dead in a burned car in a capitol hill garage.

Ashley Turton had been a Washington lobbyist for Progress Energy, and was previously the chief of staff to Connecticut Rep. Rosa DeLauro. It is still unclear what exactly happened… but it another sad day in congress. There are, so far, no witnesses or motive although it is suspected that it was an accident and that Turton crashed her car into the garage.

Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords Shot in the Head, Survives

Earlier today during a public speaking event, Gabrielle Giffords, a Democratic congresswoman from Arizona, was shot in the head outside a grocery store. A spokesman for the Pima County sheriff says that at least 12 people were shot. The Tucson Citizen reports that Rep. Giffords was “shot point blank in the head.”

Rep. Giffords was first elected to the House in 2006. She represents the state’s 8th Congressional District. Although it is unclear at the moment, many are wondering whether the gunman was Tea Party supporter. If that turns out to be true, it could have big effects on the political landscape.

Things will not be the same on Monday when Congress goes back to work. This incident is a sobering reminder of just what risks people take when they decide to work in government. The right and the Tea Party might act like the government is nefarious.. but these are public servants that having a unique viewpoint and in most cases, want to do what they think is best for the country.

UPDATE: Giffords has made it through surgery and is responding to commands. For breaking updates, check the huffingtonpost.

Ann Coulter says legalizing Marijuana will create a welfare state(Video)

John Stossel sat down with Ann Coulter last night to discuss the war on drugs. Stossel lamented the failed war on drugs, saying we lock up more people than any other country. He also said that Coulter is smart but he doesn’t see how she can’t see the folly of the drug war. Coulter cites the welfare state as a reason not to stop fighting drugs, saying that when people start doing drugs, they will stop caring about everything else, and then not only will we be paying for their drug use but also their healthcare.

John asks Ann if we should make everything illegal that can kill you, including motorcycles. Ann says that people on motorcycles kill themselves faster, so it’s Ok, she also says that smokers die sooner too, which is also why it’s OK. Ann says that smokers help social security because they die earlier. Coulter is in full troll mode today, enjoy it and try not to be too enraged.

John asks Ann, ‘what about all the death that happens just to stop people for doing drugs?’ Ann says that she would have an open mind but that there is a difference between alcohol and drugs. Coulter says that murder went down during alcohol prohibition, implying that if drug laws were lifted, America would become less safe.

House Moves to Repeal Obama Healthcare Legislation

The New York Times is reporting today that Republicans in the house have voted to debate to repeal Obama’s healthcare legislation. Republicans, with a large majority, easily passed the vote 236 to 181. This will set the stage for a very important debate, although the president has said he will veto any repeal the healthcare bill.

Bill O’Reilly and Atheist Dave Silverman Debate Religion on Fox News (Video)

Earlier tonight on The O’Reilly Factor, Bill O’Reilly sat across from Dave Silverman, president of American Atheists to discuss the new atheist Billboards being erected around New York City. Silverman and American Atheists erected the signs in response to the amount of pro-religion and anti-atheism billboards currently lining our highways. Bill took no time in jumping on Silverman for “calling Americans stupid”, Bill said that Silverman said religion was a “scam”, that implies that anyone that believes in it is stupid.

This is a false argument though, meant to distract Fox News viewers from the real question of whether god exists or not. Instead of taking the time to have serious and thoughtful debate about the issue of religion, it seems that Bill would rather paint Silverman’s views as ‘hateful’ or ‘elitist’. It’s a shame, I wonder, on a professional level, how many great interviews O’Reilly has passed up because he doesn’t even try to be a good interviewer. That said, Silverman makes some key mistakes. Bill asks him how the tides work, and Dave doesn’t seem to know. The tides are controlled by the sun and the moon. You’d think the guy on the side of reason, logic, and science would have pointed this out. Then again, having Bill scream at you is probably a little disorienting.
